Description
Graduate Development Engineer for Fuel Injection Systems
The job role involves design and development of innovative fuel injection equipment and associated system components for future automotive requirements. The role will also involve the testing and validation of components, and generating specifications based on customer requirements.
The position is based in Technical Centre Gillingham. Specific training will be provided for injector product functionality as required.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
• To evaluate customer and internal requirements and identify gaps to current products.
• To define, prioritize and execute tasks required to meet core team and project objectives.
• To develop test equipment and instrumentation.
• To define performance criteria and execute test plans on injector test rigs, engines and/or vehicles to demonstrate product performance.
• To organise the procurement and testing of sample hardware to meet project requirements.
• To interpret test data using analytical tools and provide synthesis of results.
• To prepare reports, presentations and technical documentation for internal and customer use.
• To provide clear analysis and summaries for decision making.
• To apply engineering standards, procedures and methodologies to execute project activities.
• To develop strong technical relationships with product or manufacturing engineering teams, customers and key suppliers.
• Manage work packages individually and with small teams for key activities.
• To interpret test data using analytical tools and provide synthesis of results.
• To assess and improve designs using established DFMEA methods to develop a robust product.
• To contribute to formal and informal design and development reviews at appropriate stages of projects.
• Support planning, including detailed timing plans, management reviews and customer meetings.
• To escalate, assess risks and issues to core team members and management in a timely manner and develop plans to mitigate them.
• To coach/train engineers and junior staff members.
Required experience
• Development of mechanical components/systems, ideally high precision/mass produced/highly stressed electromechanical or hydraulic systems
• Good understanding of physics and materials – applied to solving performance, strength and durability problems
• Devising test and analysis methods for product performance and durability assessment
• Characterising product performance relative to product specifications
• Supervising junior engineers or technicians – managing tasks, coaching and training
• Liaison with senior managers and customers – meetings/presentations/reports
Skills
• Ability to use Matlab to collect and process test data is an advantage
SKILLS
Mandatory
• Understanding of detailed engineering drawings and geometric tolerancing.
• IT knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point.
• English language in both written and spoken to a strong professional level.
• Personal and presentation skills, to enable liaison with internal teams and to represent the company to external clients.
Desirable
• Able to operate effectively in a multi-national multi-lingual project environment.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage several tasks at once.
• Ability to apply DFMEA including use of APIS IQ Software.
• Understanding of the capabilities of CAD and data manipulation packages (i.e. Solidworks and NI Labview / Diadem).
• Ability to use data processing and test automation software, such as Matlab or Labview, for collecting and processing data.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE
Mandatory
• Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or related subject.
• Experience with specifying test procedures, analysis and interpretation of results.
• Experience of design and development of products at all stages of product life cycle from concept through volume manufacturing.
• Experience with mechanical and/or electromechanical components and products.
Desirable
• Experience with high pressure hydraulic and electromechanical systems.
• Familiarity with high performance materials engineering and manufacturing processes e.g. grinding, heat treatment, injection moulding.
• Application of simulation methodology and fundamental physical principles to the design of hydraulic components (i.e. CFD, AMESim etc.).
