The Role
As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will provide dedicated support to a secondary-aged pupil with Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping them access the curriculum, engage positively in school life, and develop greater confidence and independence.
Working closely with the class teachers, SENCo, and wider pastoral team, you will provide tailored support throughout the school day, adapting your approach to meet the pupil's individual needs and helping them overcome barriers to learning.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a secondary-aged pupil with SEN, adapting activities and approaches to meet their individual needs.
• Work alongside class teachers to support the pupil's access to the secondary school curriculum.
• Encourage engagement, independence, confidence, and participation in lessons and wider school activities.
• Build a positive and trusting relationship with the pupil, providing consistent encouragement and emotional support.
• Support the development of social, emotional, communication, and organisational skills.
• Assist with behaviour management strategies and promote positive behaviours and outcomes.
• Help the pupil develop strategies to manage challenges and become increasingly independent in their learning.
• Support the pupil during transitions between lessons and different areas of the school where required.
• Help prepare learning resources and adapt activities to ensure the pupil can fully participate in lessons.
• Monitor and record progress, providing regular feedback to the class teacher and SENCo.
• Contribute to the implementation and review of individual support plans and learning targets.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, SEN professionals, and other members of the school team.
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
What We're Looking For
We are seeking someone who is patient, resilient, empathetic, and committed to helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
The ideal candidate will:
• Have previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant or supporting children or young people with SEN.
• Ideally have experience working within a secondary school or with young people of secondary school age.
• Demonstrate a nurturing, patient, and adaptable approach to supporting learning and wellbeing.
• Be confident in building positive and trusting relationships with young people.
• Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Be able to remain calm and consistent when supporting pupils who may experience challenges with learning, behaviour, or emotional regulation.
• Encourage independence while providing appropriate levels of support.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a wider school team.
• Be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• Hold a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
