Freelance Planning Engineer – Major Infrastructure
South West - Bridgewater | Hybrid | 6 Month Contract | Inside IR35 | Up to £550 per day
About the Company
Our client is a leading contractor delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UK. Operating within major infrastructure and engineering environments, they are involved in large-scale programmes requiring strong technical, commercial and project controls expertise.
Due to ongoing project requirements, they are looking to strengthen their planning function with an experienced Freelance Planning Engineer for an initial 6-month contract.
The Role
As a Planning Engineer, you will play a key role in the development, monitoring and management of project programmes across complex infrastructure works.
Working closely with Project Managers, Engineers and Commercial teams, you will ensure programmes accurately reflect project requirements, progress and risk. You will provide clear planning insight to support effective project delivery and decision-making.
This is a hybrid position covering London and the South East and would suit an experienced planner who is comfortable working within a fast-paced, multidisciplinary project environment.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, manage and maintain fully resourced and logically linked project programmes
Produce detailed programmes covering design, procurement and construction activities
Monitor project progress against agreed baselines and identify areas of delay or concern
Undertake critical path analysis and highlight key programme risks and opportunities
Assess the programme impact of project changes and support the development of mitigation strategies
Produce regular programme updates, progress reports and KPIs
Support project teams with accurate forecasting and programme information
Work closely with Project Managers, Engineers and Commercial teams to maintain alignment across project delivery
Support the development of tender and contract programmes where required
Ensure planning activities are aligned with contractual and commercial requirements
Contribute to programme risk analysis and project controls activities
Support and share planning best practice across the wider project team
Experience & Requirements
Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline
Previous experience working as a Planning Engineer, Senior Planner or similar within major infrastructure, energy or complex construction environments
Strong working knowledge of Primavera P6 and/or Asta Powerproject
Experience developing and maintaining detailed, logic-linked programmes
Strong understanding of NEC3 / NEC4 contracts
Experience with critical path analysis and programme change management
Knowledge of earned value analysis, QSRA and TRA methodologies
Ability to analyse programme performance and clearly communicate project risks and potential delays
Strong Excel and reporting skills
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across project, engineering and commercial teams
Able to work independently and manage competing priorities within a fast-paced project environment
