Description

Hair & Beauty Tutor – Milton Keynes

Turn practical skills into confidence, qualifications and brighter futures.

SENDhelp is recruiting an enthusiastic and engaging Hair & Beauty Tutor to join a specialist SEND setting in Milton Keynes, working with young people aged 9–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone from a hairdressing, barbering, beauty therapy or vocational training background who wants to use their industry knowledge to inspire young people who may not thrive through traditional classroom-based learning.

As a Hair & Beauty Tutor, you won't simply be teaching practical skills. You'll be helping young people discover something they're good at, develop confidence and build valuable skills that could open the door to further education, training and future employment.

About the young people you'll support

Working as a Hair & Beauty Tutor in Milton Keynes, you'll support pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), primarily relating to Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

Some pupils may also have additional needs including:

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
ADHD
Speech, language and communication needs
Moderate learning difficulties
Emotional regulation and mental health needs
Behaviour that can be challenging or distressed
Gaps in education or previous difficulties engaging with traditional learning

Many of these young people benefit enormously from practical, hands-on and vocational learning.

Hair and beauty can provide an engaging alternative to conventional classroom lessons, giving pupils an opportunity to develop creativity, communication, independence and employability skills while experiencing genuine achievement.

Your role as a Hair & Beauty Tutor

As the Hair & Beauty Tutor, you'll create engaging, practical sessions that allow young people to develop their skills in a safe, structured and encouraging environment.

Depending on your experience and the curriculum, your responsibilities could include:

Planning and delivering engaging hair and beauty sessions appropriate to pupils' abilities
Teaching practical skills across areas such as hair styling, hair care, beauty treatments and salon techniques
Demonstrating techniques clearly and safely before supporting pupils with practical activities
Making learning accessible for pupils with different SEND needs and levels of ability
Connecting practical activities with employability, communication and life skills
Building positive relationships with pupils who may previously have struggled to engage with education
Establishing clear routines, expectations and professional boundaries
Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and positive behaviour
Monitoring pupils' progress and celebrating achievements
Maintaining excellent standards of hygiene, health and safety within the learning environment
Working collaboratively with teachers, Learning Support Assistants and the wider SEND team

You'll encourage pupils to take pride in their work while helping them understand the professional standards expected within the hair and beauty industry.

From the salon to the classroom?

You may have more transferable skills than you realise.

Previous school experience can be valuable, but we're also keen to hear from professionals who have built their careers within the hair and beauty industry and are ready for something different.

Experience as a hairdresser, barber, beauty therapist, salon professional, trainer, assessor or vocational tutor could provide an excellent foundation for this role.

Skills such as building rapport with clients, demonstrating techniques, coaching junior colleagues, maintaining professional standards and adapting your communication to different people can transfer particularly well into specialist education.

Relevant hairdressing or beauty qualifications and industry experience would be highly desirable. Teaching, tutoring or assessing qualifications would also be advantageous.

Most importantly, you'll need the patience, resilience and creativity to engage young people whose previous experiences of education may not always have been positive.
