Description

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Legal Counsel to join the Group Services function of a leading international fiduciary and financial services organisation in Guernsey.

This is a senior in-house legal role, providing primary legal support to the Guernsey boards while working closely with the General Counsel and wider legal team across multiple jurisdictions. The role will suit a commercially minded lawyer who is confident advising senior stakeholders and managing a varied range of legal, regulatory and governance matters.

Key responsibilities

The role will include:
• Acting as the primary legal adviser to Guernsey-based boards on legal, fiduciary, regulatory and governance matters
• Supporting board decision-making on legally sensitive issues and contributing to legal reports and board papers
• Managing legal risk, privilege and escalation of material matters
• Supporting professional indemnity notifications, complaints, contentious matters, claims and regulatory issues
• Reviewing and advising on contracts and other commercial legal matters
• Working closely with Compliance, Risk, Finance, Operations and business teams across the organisation
• Supporting the General Counsel with Group-wide legal matters, risk reporting and strategic initiatives
• Managing relationships with external legal advisers and helping control external legal spend
• Supervising junior legal team members, reviewing work and supporting their development
• Coordinating cross-border legal matters involving multiple entities or jurisdictions
• Supporting legal operations including matter intake, allocation, deadline management and contract management
Experience and qualifications

Applicants should be:
• A qualified lawyer with a minimum of 4 years’ PQE
• Ideally qualified in Guernsey, Jersey, England & Wales or another equivalent common law jurisdiction
• Experienced in advising boards, senior management or client-facing teams
• Able to demonstrate strong legal judgement and commercial awareness
Experience within one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
• Fiduciary, trust or corporate services
• Financial services
• Regulatory matters
• Commercial or in-house legal work
• Contentious matters or litigation
• Developing legal templates, playbooks or training materials

Key skills

The successful candidate will have:
• Strong technical legal knowledge
• Excellent drafting and analytical skills
• A pragmatic and commercial approach to legal risk
• Confidence dealing with senior stakeholders
• Strong judgement around escalation, privilege and the use of external counsel
• The ability to manage multiple matters and competing priorities
• Experience supervising junior lawyers or legal support staff
• Clear and concise communication skills
• A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively across different jurisdictions and functions

This is a full-time, office-based position in Guernsey offering the opportunity to take on a broad senior legal remit within an international organisation.
