Description

Axcis Education is currently recruiting for a full-time Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist college in Exeter. This long-term role is ideal for someone with previous experience supporting individuals with special educational needs, particularly those with complex needs.

The college caters for young people aged 11 to 15 with a range of needs including Autism, learning difficulties, pre-verbal or non-verbal communication, and behaviours that may challenge. These behaviours are understood and supported as a form of communication. The focus is on developing independence, communication skills, and preparing learners for adult life in a nurturing and inclusive environment.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will support students either on a one-to-one basis or within small groups. Your responsibilities will include assisting with communication, using tools such as visual aids, Makaton, or PECS, providing personal care and physical support where necessary, and responding calmly and effectively to behaviours that challenge. A flexible and adaptable approach is essential, as staff may be required to move between classes or areas of the site based on the needs of the college. You will work closely with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to create a positive, consistent and safe learning environment for all students.

This role is best suited to individuals with experience in SEND settings, whether as a Teaching Assistant, support worker, care assistant, youth worker, or similar role. You must be resilient, empathetic, and comfortable working in an environment where pupils may communicate in non-traditional ways and require a high level of support. A strong understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to the wellbeing of young people is essential.

In return, Axcis Education offers ongoing support through a dedicated consultant, access to training and professional development, competitive rates of pay (paid weekly), and opportunities for long-term placements or permanent roles in SEND education.

If you are passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and want to make a real difference, we would love to hear from you.
