Your Role as an SEN Learning Support Assistant
As an SEN Learning Support Assistant, you will work alongside teachers and other professionals to help pupils access education, develop their communication and independence, and enjoy positive experiences at school.
Your key responsibilities may include:
Providing one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties.
Supporting pupils with their learning, communication, social development and independence.
Using visual, sensory and alternative communication strategies to help pupils engage and express themselves.
Supporting pupils during practical, sensory, physical and swimming activities where required.
Assisting with personal care, mobility and physical needs while maintaining pupils' dignity and independence.
Following individual EHCP targets, behaviour strategies and support plans.
Helping create a safe, positive and engaging learning environment.
Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and other members of the school's multidisciplinary team.
Who Are We Looking For?
Previous school experience can be beneficial, but your transferable experience matters too.
You could be an excellent SEN Learning Support Assistant if you have experience within:
Health and social care
Childcare, nurseries or Early Years
Support work or residential care
Youth work
Mental health or behavioural support
Disability support
SEN schools or mainstream education
Care or community-based services
We would particularly like to hear from candidates who have experience supporting children or adults with learning difficulties, autism, SEN, communication difficulties, physical disabilities, challenging behaviour or complex needs.
Knowledge of approaches such as Makaton, PECS/AAC, sensory support, positive behaviour support or moving and handling would be beneficial, although relevant training and development can help you build your specialist knowledge.
Most importantly, you'll need to be patient, compassionate, proactive and comfortable supporting pupils whose needs and communication styles can vary considerably.
