Freelance Senior Estimator – Civil Engineering
Hybrid Working | West Wales | Long-Term Freelance Contract
About the Company
Our client is a well-established civil engineering contractor with a strong presence across infrastructure, highways, utilities, and specialist construction projects throughout the UK. They are recognised for delivering high-quality projects, maintaining long-term client relationships, and providing innovative solutions across the full project lifecycle. Due to an increase in secured work and a healthy pipeline of future projects, they are looking to appoint an experienced Senior Estimator to strengthen their pre-construction team.
The Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Estimator to join a growing commercial team on a freelance basis. Working in a hybrid capacity from West Wales, you will play a key role in the successful preparation and submission of competitive tenders for a range of civil engineering schemes.
The role requires a commercially astute individual with strong technical knowledge and the ability to manage multiple tenders whilst building and maintaining strong client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare detailed and accurate estimates for civil engineering projects.
Review and interpret specifications, drawings, and tender documentation.
Create robust pricing submissions and present proposals to clients.
Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
Undertake first principle estimating and project take-offs.
Assess project risks and opportunities during the tender stage.
Liaise with operational and commercial teams to develop winning tender strategies.
Produce cost plans, budgets, and tender reports.
Support projects from design development through to construction delivery.
Report directly and work closely with senior leadership.
Experience & Requirements
Proven experience as a Senior Estimator within the civil engineering sector.
Strong track record of preparing and submitting successful tenders.
Experience presenting quotations, pricing submissions, and specifications to clients.
First Principles estimating experience is essential.
Competent in project take-offs and quantity analysis.
Experience using Candy and/or Causeway estimating software.
Excellent commercial awareness and understanding of construction methodologies.
Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines.
Technical Skills
Civil engineering estimating and tender preparation.
Cost planning and budget development.
Risk assessment and value engineering.
Proficiency in Candy and/or Causeway systems.
Interpretation of technical drawings and specifications.
People Skills
Strong communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to build long-term client relationships.
Excellent organisational and time-management abilities.
Proactive and detail-oriented approach.
Capable of collaborating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
