SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant Required – November/December Starts

Are you passionate about supporting young people who face barriers to learning? Do you have the patience, resilience and empathy to help students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs develop their confidence, manage their emotions and reach their full potential?

We are currently recruiting a dedicated and resilient SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive secondary school in Warrington, with a long-term opportunity available from late November and December 2026.

The school is committed to supporting students with a range of social, emotional and behavioural needs, providing a structured and supportive environment where young people can develop both academically and personally.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building positive relationships, understands the importance of consistency and wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people.

Whether your experience comes from mainstream education, specialist SEND settings, alternative provision, residential care or youth work, we would love to hear from you.

The Role

As an SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require additional emotional, social and behavioural support, helping them overcome barriers to learning and engage positively with school life.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH and behavioural needs.
• Building positive, trusting relationships that promote confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing.
• Supporting students with emotional regulation through positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
• Helping students manage challenging situations and develop positive coping mechanisms.
• Encouraging engagement, independence and participation within lessons and across the wider school.
• Supporting individual education plans, behaviour support plans and personalised interventions.
• Working collaboratively with teachers, SEND staff and pastoral teams to support student progress.
• Promoting positive behaviour, boundaries and appropriate social interactions.

Helping maintain a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment.

Every day will provide an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by helping young people overcome challenges, develop positive behaviours and build the skills they need for their future.

What We're Looking For

• We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional learning needs.
• Experience within schools, alternative provision, SEND settings, residential care, youth work, mentoring or similar environments would be highly beneficial.

You will ideally be:

• Calm, patient and emotionally resilient.
• Confident managing challenging behaviour and supporting emotional regulation.
• Skilled at building positive relationships with young people.
• Consistent, approachable and able to act as a positive role model.
• Understanding of the challenges faced by young people with SEMH needs.
• Confident working independently and as part of a wider school team.
• Committed to safeguarding and promoting children's welfare.
• Knowledge of behaviour management strategies, trauma-informed practice, restorative approaches or de-escalation techniques would be advantageous but is not essential.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone with the right attitude, a genuine passion for supporting young people and the resilience to make a positive impact.

Why Join?

• Late November and December 2026 start opportunities.
• Full-time, long-term placement.
• Monday to Friday working hours – 8:30am to 3:30pm.

• Supportive and collaborative secondary school environment.
