Description
Axcis Education is recruiting a Trainee SEND Learning Support Assistant on behalf of a specialist day school for young people aged 11–16 with complex needs. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to begin or develop a career in SEND support, working in a school that combines academic learning with therapeutic support.
The Setting
The school provides an inclusive, nurturing environment for pupils who have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), many with social, emotional, and mental health needs, as well as communication and autism spectrum challenges. Classes are small, enabling staff to deliver personalised support and build strong, trusting relationships with every student.
The school’s ethos is centred around helping students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, fostering confidence, independence, and life skills alongside curriculum learning. Staff are committed to understanding each child as an individual, tailoring support to help them succeed and flourish.
Role Overview
As a Trainee SEND Learning Support Assistant, the successful candidate will:
Support students in classrooms, small groups, or 1:1, helping them engage with lessons and achieve their learning goals.
Use visual aids, assistive communication tools, and personalised strategies to support understanding and participation.
Assist students in developing social, emotional, and communication skills, as well as independence and life skills.
Help implement individual learning plans and EHCP outcomes, observing and reporting progress to the wider team.
Contribute to a safe, positive, and supportive school environment where students feel valued and understood.
Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure a consistent, collaborative approach.
Person Specification
Axcis Education is looking for candidates who:
Have an interest in working with young people with SEND, particularly those with SEMH, communication difficulties, or autism spectrum conditions.
Demonstrate patience, empathy, adaptability, and resilience.
Can work effectively as part of a team and take guidance from experienced staff.
Are reliable, positive, and motivated to make a difference in students’ lives.
Are open to learning and development, with a commitment to building skills in SEND support.
Why This Role is Attractive
Provides the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ learning, confidence, and wellbeing.
Experience working in a specialist environment with excellent facilities and small class sizes.
Exposure to therapeutic approaches, communication strategies, and SEND best practices.
Supportive team environment with opportunities for professional development and career progression.
Axcis Education invites applications from those who are committed to inclusive education and enthusiastic about supporting young people to thrive in a specialist learning environment.
