Description
Job Title: Behaviour Mentor/SEMH Learning Support
Pay: Starting at £450/week
Start Date: ASAP
A forward-thinking primary school in South Gloucestershire has developed a small, internal alternative provision to support pupils who are currently unable to access the mainstream classroom. We are seeking a committed and reflective Behaviour Mentor to work primarily with a Year 4 pupil whose learning pathway is currently bespoke and highly personalised.
This is a unique and meaningful opportunity to make a genuine difference at a critical stage of early intervention.
About the Role
You will be the key adult supporting one pupil for the majority of the school day (until 2pm). This pupil is not currently accessing the mainstream curriculum and instead follows a student-interest-led approach designed to rebuild engagement, trust and confidence in education.
The provision is creative, flexible and relationship-led. Learning is structured around the pupil’s interests, with a strong focus on arts, crafts and practical activities — but with carefully embedded literacy, numeracy and communication development.
You will have responsibility for:
Designing and delivering tailored, interest-led learning activities
Embedding core academic skills into creative tasks
Supporting emotional regulation throughout the day
Recognising early signs of dysregulation and implementing agreed strategies
Managing demand-avoidant behaviours using low-arousal approaches
Recording observations and progress updates
Liaising closely with the SENCO and senior leadership team
Maintaining predictable routines and clear boundaries
The pupil leaves school at 2pm. From 2pm–3:30pm, you will support within another classroom as a general Teaching Assistant, assisting with group learning, transitions and classroom routines.
The Ideal Candidate
This role would suit someone who is deeply passionate about improving long-term outcomes through early intervention.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience of:
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Working with demand-avoidant behaviours
Supporting children experiencing emotional dysregulation
Trauma-informed or attachment-aware practice
A background in youth work, sports coaching or mentoring would be highly valued, especially if you are confident building relationships through shared interests and structured activities.
You must be:
Calm and emotionally regulated yourself
Creative and proactive in planning engaging activities
Reflective and open to adapting strategies
Firm but nurturing in maintaining boundaries
Why This Role Matters
This is not simply behaviour management. It is relationship rebuilding. It is creating a safe, consistent environment where a child can re-engage with learning at their own pace.
The school is committed to inclusion and believes strongly in early intervention rather than exclusion. You will be supported by a collaborative leadership team who value creativity and reflective practice.
