Job Title: Complex Needs Teaching Assistant
Location: Primary school Romford
Contract Type: Full-time
Job Purpose
To support pupils with complex needs (e.g. profound and multiple learning difficulties, autism, sensory impairments, medical conditions, or behavioural challenges) to access learning and achieve their potential in a safe and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Support individual pupils and small groups under the direction of teaching staff.
• Assist with personal care, including toileting, feeding, and mobility (may include manual handling).
• Help develop and deliver tailored learning plans
• Use specialist strategies, including PECS, Makaton, or sensory integration techniques.
• Provide emotional support and manage behaviour using positive behaviour support (PBS) strategies.
• Monitor and report on pupil progress to teachers and SENCOs.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and stimulating environment.
• Liaise with parents, carers, and external professionals (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists).
Requirements:
• Patience, resilience, and empathy
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to follow care plans and behaviour support plans
• Confidence using specialist equipment (e.g., hoists, communication aids)
• Teamwork and the ability to build strong relationships with staff and pupils
• Good organisational skills and flexibility
• Experience working with children or young people with SEND, especially complex needs
• Understanding of safeguarding procedures
• NVQ Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent
• Training in Team Teach, Makaton, PECS, BSL, or manual handling
