A well-established organisation in the telecommunications and technology sector is seeking a Data Centre and Buildings Technician to join their Engineering team. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that Data Centre infrastructure and Building Management Systems are maintained to the highest industry standards.
About the Role
As a Data Centre and Buildings Technician, you will be responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of critical environments. This includes ensuring compliance with service levels, managing alarms and fire suppression systems, overseeing contractors, and supporting customers with technical requests. You will also take part in an on-call rota to support out-of-hours technical issues.
Key Responsibilities
• Carry out daily Data Centre walk rounds to ensure all critical environments comply with policies and SLA standards.
• Escalate and resolve issues through ServiceNow and liaise with senior staff or contractors as appropriate.
• Manage isolations and de-isolations of fire suppression and alarm systems, including contractor supervision during these events.
• Operate and train others on security and access control systems.
• Authorise and monitor contractors working in critical areas, ensuring compliance with permit-to-work and security procedures.
• Assist in maintaining mechanical and electrical systems across the estate.
• Support regulatory, data protection, and health & safety compliance requirements.
Skills and Experience
Essential:
• Experience working in a critical equipment environment.
• Knowledge of data centre power, cabling, fire, and security systems.
• Familiarity with IT rack structures and tape backup systems.
• Ability to issue permits to work and isolate relevant systems.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Valid driving licence.
Desirable:
• Technical qualifications in critical power or air conditioning systems.
• Knowledge of UPS systems, standby generators, and control systems.
• Experience with advanced fire alarm systems (VESDA, FM200).
• Understanding of automated monitoring and control systems (BMS).
• Awareness of the financial elements of data centre operations.
