Mental Health Learning Support Assistant
Location: Coventry, Warwickshire
Contract Type: Full-time
Salary: £89 – £105 per day / £445 – £525 per week
Axcis Education is currently recruiting for confident, resilient, and compassionate SEMH & Mental Health Support Assistants to work in secondary schools and alternative provisions across Coventry and Warwickshire.
We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in mental health, youth work, challenging behaviour, or trauma-informed care who are looking to make a genuine impact in the lives of young people.
The Role:
You will...
Support secondary-aged students with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, often linked to anxiety, trauma, ADHD, conduct disorders, and low emotional resilience.
Work 1:1 or with small groups to help students regulate emotions, re-engage with learning, and build positive relationships.
Respond calmly and effectively to challenging behaviour, using de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches.
Collaborate with pastoral teams, SENCOs and external agencies to implement individual behaviour and support plans.
Create a safe, structured, and consistent environment that helps students feel understood and supported.
Mentor students who may have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), exclusions, or difficulties with authority and routine.
About You:
Experience working with teenagers or young adults who face mental health challenges, behavioural issues, or complex emotional needs.
Background in mental health support, youth work, PRUs, social care, or residential care is highly valued.
Emotionally resilient, firm but fair, and able to maintain clear boundaries.
Strong communication skills and the ability to defuse high-stress situations while building trust with hard-to-reach students.
Comfortable working within a trauma-informed and behaviour-focused framework.
Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or similar is a bonus – but not essential (training can be provided).
