About the Setting

This role is within a nurturing and inclusive primary school setting in Gloucestershire that values every learner, encourages exploration, growth and wellbeing, and supports children with diverse needs to flourish. The school environment is friendly, welcoming and focused on helping children build confidence, resilience and progress in all areas of their learning.

Role Summary

As a Teaching Assistant in a Year 2 class, you will:

Provide targeted support for one child with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN), who is working approximately two years behind in their learning.

Work closely with the class teacher, the SENDCo and the support team to deliver differentiated activities and adapt learning to meet the child’s individual needs, particularly in reading, writing, maths and communication.

Use a calm, consistent and structured approach to help the child engage, feel safe and valued — supporting routines, transitions and social-interaction opportunities.

Recognise and respond to the child’s non-verbal cues, sensory needs and communication styles, adapting your approach day-to-day as required.

Foster independence, encouraging the child to participate in tasks, build confidence and develop skills at their own pace.

Liaise with the teacher and other staff to monitor progress and contribute to reviews of strategies, ensuring consistency between classroom practice and the child’s personalised plan.

Support the broader class as needed — working flexibly to engage small groups or support activities while maintaining focus on the key pupil’s needs.

What We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will:

Have experience (or a strong willingness to learn) working with children who have ASC, SLCN and significant learning delays.

Be patient, empathetic and flexible — ready to adapt when the mood, sensory state or needs of the child change.

Be skilled at reading body language and non-verbal communication, and able to adjust support accordingly.

Be reliable, punctual, positive and prepared; someone who makes a strong, confident first impression and is ready to build trust with the child and the class team.

Be a team-player who works well under the guidance of the teacher and SENDCo, yet able to take initiative when required.

Be committed to helping a child with additional needs develop communication, social skills, independence and a love of learning.

Why Apply?

Contribute to meaningful change in the life of a young child with ASC and SLCN, helping them catch up, thrive and feel part of a supportive classroom environment.

Be part of a primary school that values inclusion, kindness and positive relationships — where you can make a real difference day-to-day.

Flexible role options (part-time or full-time) allowing you to balance professional and personal life.

Join a welcoming, supportive staff team who recognise the importance of your specialist role and provide the guidance and structure to succeed.

Location in Gloucestershire — accessible and situated in a school committed to the growth and wellbeing of all children.

If you are passionate about helping children with special educational needs, believe in the power of patience, consistency and understanding — and want to become a valued part of a Year 2 team supporting a child with ASC and SLCN — we’d love to hear from you.
