This specialist school in St Albans supports children and young people aged 2–19 with a wide range of complex and profound learning needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).
The school takes a highly personalised approach to education, with a strong focus on developing pupils' communication, independence, social, life and key skills. Learning is adapted to individual needs and can include sensory-led activities, communication support, practical life skills and opportunities to prepare young people for adulthood.
You'll be joining a multidisciplinary environment where education staff work alongside professionals including speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and specialist nursing staff.
Your Role as an SEN Learning Support Assistant
As an SEN Learning Support Assistant, your key responsibilities will include:
Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with complex SEND.
Supporting teachers to deliver engaging, personalised and sensory-based learning activities.
Helping pupils develop their communication, social interaction and independence.
Using visual and alternative communication strategies to help pupils express themselves and engage with learning.
Supporting pupils with their physical, sensory and emotional regulation needs.
Providing personal care and mobility support where required, always maintaining pupils' dignity.
Encouraging positive behaviour and helping create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment.
Celebrating progress at every level, recognising that even small steps can represent significant achievements.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for an SEN Learning Support Assistant who is patient, compassionate and genuinely motivated to make a difference.
Previous experience supporting children or young people with ASD, SLD, PMLD or other complex needs would be highly beneficial. However, candidates with transferable experience from care, support work, youth work or similar environments are also encouraged to apply.
Most importantly, you'll need to be reliable, adaptable and comfortable providing hands-on support to pupils with varying levels of need.
