About the Children You'll Be Supporting
The school provides specialist education for children and young people with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Many pupils have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), alongside associated needs which can include ADHD, speech and language difficulties and cognition and learning needs.
Some pupils may have experienced significant barriers to education and can require additional support with emotional regulation, behaviour, communication, relationships and engagement with learning.
As an SEN Learning Support Assistant, you'll build consistent, positive relationships with pupils and help them feel safe, understood and ready to learn.
The school uses a personalised approach, small classes and specialist staff to support pupils academically, socially, emotionally and behaviourally.
Key Responsibilities of an SEN Learning Support Assistant
As an SEN Learning Support Assistant in Oxford, your responsibilities will include:
Providing one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEND.
Supporting pupils with SEMH, Autism/ASC and associated additional needs.
Helping pupils access learning activities and remain engaged during lessons.
Working alongside teachers and other specialist staff to deliver individualised support.
Following strategies outlined within pupils' EHCPs and individual support plans.
Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and helping them develop positive coping strategies.
Using positive and consistent behaviour-support approaches to help pupils overcome barriers to learning.
Building trusting and professional relationships with pupils while maintaining clear boundaries.
Encouraging independence, confidence, communication and social development.
Helping to create a structured, safe and inclusive learning environment.
Monitoring pupils' progress and communicating observations to teachers and other members of the school team.
Supporting pupils during activities outside the classroom where required.
Promoting safeguarding, wellbeing and the highest standards of care at all times.
What We're Looking For
The ideal SEN Learning Support Assistant will be someone who is patient, resilient and able to build positive relationships with young people.
Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, Autism, ADHD, challenging behaviour or other additional needs would be highly beneficial. Experience could come from a school, SEND setting, youth work, care, support work, sports coaching or a similar environment.
Most importantly, you'll need to be calm and consistent, communicate effectively and understand that behaviour can often be a form of communication.
