SEND Teaching Assistant – Therapeutic Provision (Non-Handling)
Location: Sutton
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 3:45pm
We are currently recruiting for a full-time SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming, all-age foundation special school in Sutton. This is a therapeutic, non-handling setting that supports students with a range of complex additional needs, offering a calm and structured environment focused on wellbeing and development.
About the Role
You will be supporting students across the school on both a 1:1 and small group basis. The students have a range of needs, including:
Autism (ASD)
Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties)
Medical needs
Down’s Syndrome
Many of the students require support with emotional regulation, communication, and daily routines, so a patient, consistent, and nurturing approach is essential.
The School Environment
This setting takes a holistic and therapeutic approach to learning, with a strong focus on supporting the whole child. Facilities and activities include:
A hydrotherapy pool on site
Regular swimming trips
Structured, low-arousal learning environments
A focus on emotional wellbeing and communication
Life skills and independence development
This is a non-physical intervention setting, meaning behaviour is managed through de-escalation and positive support strategies.
What You’ll Be Doing
Supporting students on a 1:1 and group basis
Encouraging engagement in learning and daily activities
Using positive behaviour support strategies
Assisting with individual learning plans
Supporting students with personal care and medical needs where required
Helping students build social, emotional, and life skills
Creating a safe, consistent, and supportive environment
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for individuals who are:
Calm, patient, and empathetic
Confident supporting students with complex needs, including PMLD and medical needs
Able to manage behaviours using positive, non-confrontational approaches
Reliable, proactive, and able to use their initiative
Passionate about supporting young people with SEND
Previous experience in a SEND setting is highly desirable.
