Freelance Site Engineer – Flood Defence & Environment Agency (EA) Projects
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Freelance Site Engineer to join a well-established civil engineering contractor delivering a programme of Flood Defence and Environment Agency (EA) works. This role will involve working across multiple active sites, supporting the delivery of critical infrastructure projects aimed at flood risk management, river restoration, and coastal protection.
This is a long-term freelance opportunity, offering a minimum 6-month contract with strong potential for extension based on performance and project requirements.
Role Overview
As a Site Engineer, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of complex civil engineering works, ensuring all setting out and technical aspects of the project are executed accurately and efficiently. You will be working closely with Site Managers, Project Managers, and subcontractors to maintain programme, quality, and safety standards across multiple schemes.
Projects will typically include flood alleviation schemes, riverbank stabilisation, embankments, drainage infrastructure, culverts, and associated earthworks and reinforced concrete structures, all in line with Environment Agency specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out accurate setting out for a range of civil engineering activities including earthworks, drainage, RC structures, and flood defence assets
- Interpreting and working from technical drawings, specifications, and design information
- Ensuring works are delivered in line with Environment Agency standards and project requirements
- Managing and coordinating with subcontractors on site to ensure quality and programme targets are met
- Producing and maintaining site records, including as-built drawings, QA documentation, and daily diaries
- Supporting the implementation and monitoring of health, safety, and environmental controls
- Conducting site surveys and providing technical support to the wider project team
- Assisting with temporary works coordination where required
- Identifying and resolving any technical issues on site in a proactive manner
Requirements
- Demonstrable experience working as a Site Engineer within civil engineering or infrastructure projects
- Strong background in flood defence, Environment Agency (EA) works, water, or marine projects
- Experience working on multiple sites or frameworks is highly advantageous
- Competent in the use of setting out equipment (e.g., Leica, Trimble GPS, Total Stations)
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- CSCS card (essential)
- SMSTS or SSSTS (preferred)
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites
