Teaching Assistant (SEMH & Personal Care) – Stockport
Start Date: ASAP
Location: Stockport, Greater Manchester
Role Type: Full-time / Long-term (term-time only)
About the Role:
We are currently seeking dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistants with personal care experience to join a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) School in Stockport. This is a rewarding opportunity to work 1:1 with students who have complex needs, supporting their academic, emotional, and personal development in a structured and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide 1:1 support for pupils with SEMH and complex learning needs
• Support students with personal care, ensuring dignity, safety, and wellbeing at all times
• Assist pupils to engage with learning activities, both in and out of the classroom
• Help manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours using positive behaviour strategies
• Support emotional regulation, social skills, and communication development
• Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and external professionals
• Maintain accurate records and contribute to individual support plans (EHCPs)
• Create a calm, consistent, and supportive learning environment
About the Students
• Pupils may present with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, trauma-related needs, and behavioural challenges
• Many require consistent routines, patience, and strong boundaries
• Support is highly individualised and relationship-based
Essential Requirements
• Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or Support Worker
• Proven personal care experience (essential)
• Experience working with SEMH, SEN, or complex needs
• Ability to build positive and trusting relationships
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
