SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant – Secondary School

Are you passionate about supporting secondary-aged young people who face barriers to learning?

Do you have the patience, resilience and empathy to support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviour?

A welcoming and inclusive secondary school in Knowsley is looking for a dedicated SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant to join their team on a long-term basis, with immediate and October start dates available.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in education, care, youth work or similar settings who wants to develop their career supporting young people with SEMH and behavioural needs.

The Role

As an SEMH & Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant, you will:

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to secondary-aged students
• Support pupils with SEMH, behavioural and additional needs
• Build positive and consistent relationships with students
• Help pupils manage emotions, behaviour and engagement
• Use appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
• Encourage students to engage positively with lessons and school life
• Support individual education plans, behaviour plans and personalised interventions
• Work closely with teachers, SEND staff and pastoral teams
• Help maintain a safe, structured and inclusive secondary school environment

What We're Looking For

We're keen to hear from candidates with experience supporting young people with:

• SEMH needs
• Challenging behaviour
• Autism or ADHD
• Additional learning needs
• Emotional or social difficulties

Experience can come from a secondary school, alternative provision, care, youth work, residential or community setting.

You'll need to be:

• Calm, patient and emotionally resilient
• Consistent and confident when managing challenging situations
• Able to build positive professional relationships with teenagers
• A strong communicator and positive role model
• Confident working as part of a wider school team
• Committed to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing

Knowledge of behaviour management, trauma-informed practice or restorative approaches would be beneficial but is not essential.
