Teaching Assistant
Location: Frome, Somerset
Pay: £14.61 – £15.00 per hour (PAYE)
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:15pm
We are currently seeking enthusiastic and caring Teaching Assistants to support pupils at a specialist school in Frome. This is an opportunity to become part of a dedicated education team working with children and young people aged 4–19 who have a range of severe and complex learning difficulties.
No two days will look the same. Pupils have individual learning goals and benefit from a varied approach to education, incorporating classroom learning, practical experiences, sensory activities and opportunities to develop everyday life skills.
The school is committed to helping every pupil make progress, however big or small. As a Teaching Assistant, you will help turn these learning opportunities into positive experiences, encouraging pupils to explore their abilities, communicate their needs and become as independent as possible.
What Will You Be Doing?
As part of the classroom support team, you will be involved in a variety of activities, including:
• Assisting pupils with daily classroom activities and individual learning programmes.
• Supporting children with complex learning difficulties, Autism and additional physical or sensory needs.
• Using different approaches to help pupils communicate, interact and express themselves.
• Getting involved in creative, practical and sensory-based learning activities.
• Helping pupils build everyday skills, from making choices to developing greater independence.
• Encouraging participation in activities both inside and outside the classroom.
• Supporting access to specialist facilities and activities, which may include sensory-based learning and therapeutic sessions.
• Recognising individual achievements and encouraging pupils to try new experiences.
• Helping maintain a positive, structured and encouraging environment.
• Following individual support plans and working alongside teachers and other professionals.
You could be a great fit if you:
• Have experience working with children or adults with additional needs.
• Have supported individuals with Autism, learning disabilities or complex needs.
• Are naturally patient, observant and compassionate.
• Are comfortable adapting activities to suit different communication and learning styles.
• Enjoy creative activities and finding different ways to engage others.
• Can remain calm and encouraging when situations become challenging.
• Understand the importance of treating every individual with dignity and respect.
• Are enthusiastic about helping others achieve greater independence.
Previous SEND experience is beneficial but does not have to be exclusively professional.
We welcome applications from people with relevant personal experience, including those who have supported family members or individuals with additional needs. Experience from care, support work, youth work or education is also highly relevant.
