Description
Location: Stonehouse, GL10
Hours: Part-Time/ Flexible, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday
Contract: Temporary with the view to go permanent
Are you a care assistant looking to transfer into education? Have you ever thought about working in a special needs school? Are you looking for a role with more sociable hours? No night shifts or weekends?
Who are Axcis?
Axcis are an education agency but we specialise in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This means any work you do will be with a child with some form of SEND whether that is autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, behaviour that can be challenging, physical disabilities etc.
This particular role is based in an SEN school, more commonly known as a Special Needs School. They are looking for someone who can effectively work closely with their younger students in their primary/ secondary site. For this role you’ll likely be working with different students throughout the day and possibly be involved in some personal care i.e. changing nappies and feeding.
About the School:
• The ages there range from 2-16 and they have a post 16 site which ranges from 16-19. It is a smaller site with classroom sizes of 8-10 students with 4-5 Teaching Assistants per class.
• This setting really promotes students independence and engages them in creative learning. Each student will have specialised, individual learning pathways that focus on promoting communication, independence, self-care and cognition alongside their personalised academic learning.
• The school has many therapeutic and sensory environments including sensory rooms, hydrotherapy pool, soft play areas and dark rooms to help their students thrive.
Most students in this school will have one of the following disabilities:
• Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) – significant cognitive delays impacting academic learning and everyday functioning.
• Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) – complex needs involving severe intellectual disability plus physical and medical support requirements.
• Additional disabilities such as:
• Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASD), including associated behaviours and communication needs.
• Sensory impairments (visual or hearing difficulties).
• Epilepsy and other medical conditions.
• Challenging behaviours often linked with communication or sensory needs.
Why do Care Assistants Thrive in SEN Schools?
After working with multiple different schools in Gloucestershire, I have found that care assistants get on so well within the work we do as you already have all of the transferable skills needed to succeed in this role. Care assistants often bring warmth, humour and human connection. For SEN pupils, especially those with communication difficulties, relationships matter as much as curriculum — sometimes more.
• Supporting personal care with dignity and patience
• Helping people who may have limited communication
• Reading non-verbal cues, routines and behaviour
• High levels of empathy
• Emotional resilience
• The ability to stay calm during distress or challenging behaviour
• You celebrate small wins
• Stick with routines
And most importantly – you want to make a real difference to those who need support.
If you are looking for a change in career and interested in finding out more about this role then please do get in touch.

• Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm.
• Roles: Full-time/ Part-time opportunities are available.
