Job Profile: SEN Teaching Assistant
Job Title: Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant
Location: Dagenham
Contract Type: Full-time
A primary school in Dagenham is seeking a SEN teaching assistant to join their team. The role will be full time starting in September, but can potentially start earlier for the right candidate.
Job Purpose:
To provide tailored support to pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they have access to a positive, inclusive learning environment that meets their individual academic, emotional, and social development needs. The SEN Teaching Assistant works closely with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to implement personalised learning strategies and contribute to students’ overall progress.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide one-to-one or small group support for pupils with SEN, both in and out of the classroom.
• Support pupils with a range of needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, sensory processing issues, and learning disabilities.
• Adapt learning materials and activities to support the differentiated needs of SEN pupils.
• Encourage and support the development of students’ communication, social, and emotional skills.
• Use specialist tools and strategies such as visual timetables, sensory resources, and communication aids.
• Monitor and record students’ progress and provide feedback to teaching staff and SENCO.
• Promote inclusion and independence by helping students access the curriculum and participate in school life.
• Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, and parents/carers to ensure continuity and consistency in support.
• Safeguard the wellbeing of all pupils, following school policies and procedures.
Requirements:
• Experience working with children or young people with SEN (in a school or similar setting).
• Good understanding of a range of special educational needs and how to support them.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to stay calm, patient, and empathetic under pressure.
• Relevant qualifications or training (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, Autism awareness, Team Teach) – desirable.
• Passionate about supporting children with additional needs.
• Flexible and adaptable to meet varying student needs.
• Reliable, proactive, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
• Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
