Description

Learning Disabilities Teaching Assistant
Full-time (08:30–16:30, 4 or 5 days a week)
£13.70 per hour
Starts in September; permanent after a 16-week settling-in period

We’re working in partnership with a college on its Radstock campus to recruit a dedicated Learning Disabilities Teaching Assistant. You’ll support post-16 students with complex needs, learning disabilities and autism in hands-on, practical settings—helping them make real progress.

What you’ll be doing:

Providing patient 1:1 support during sessions across vocational settings such as animal care, construction and mechanics

Helping learners engage safely with outdoor and workshop-based activities on the rural campus site with livestock, a construction skills centre and engineering workshops

Building trust and confidence with learners who may struggle to regulate emotions and behaviour

Working with an inclusive teaching team to adapt tasks and routines for each individual

Who we’re looking for:
We’re not focusing on formal experience. We need someone with compassion, emotional resilience and the ability to stay calm when working with vulnerable young adults. If you’re caring and reliable—someone who wants to be part of meaningful change—you could be the right match. Coaching, volunteering or youth work experience is welcome but not essential.

Why this position matters:

Ofsted’s inspection (October?2023) rated overall performance as Requires Improvement, but provision for students with high needs—including those with disabilities—was judged Good

Inspectors noted inclusive, supportive programmes and that learners with high needs benefit from quality support systems

Why you’ll want this role:

Full-time, stable hours with no unsociable shift times

Work in engaging practical environments—from caring for pygmy goats to hands-on vehicle workshops

Make a real difference in students’ lives through empathy, patience and consistency

Develop your skills working alongside specialists who truly understand SEND learners

If you’ve got the right attitude and a steady demeanour for supporting vulnerable young people in hands-on settings—apply today.
