Job Title: Teaching Assistant – Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)
Location: Barking

Job Purpose:
As a Teaching Assistant in a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), you will play a vital role in supporting students who have been temporarily or permanently excluded from mainstream education. You will provide tailored academic and emotional support to students with a range of behavioural, social, and emotional challenges. The role involves working closely with teachers and other staff to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assist with the delivery of educational activities to small groups or individual students.
• Adapt teaching materials to meet the diverse needs of students, ensuring accessibility and engagement.
• Help students with tasks such as reading, writing, and numeracy.
• Support students in achieving their individual learning goals and improve academic progress.
• Provide pastoral support to students, helping to build positive relationships and manage challenging behaviour.
• Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation, working with staff to implement
• Provide emotional support and guidance, building students’ confidence and self-esteem.
• Assist in maintaining a calm and productive classroom environment.
• Support with classroom routines and ensure that students are focused and engaged in their tasks.
• Work with teachers to manage disruptive behaviour and resolve conflicts.
• Work closely with teachers, SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), and other professionals to monitor student progress and wellbeing.
• Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, ensuring that information is clear and relevant.


Requirements:
• Experience working with children or young people, particularly those with behavioural, emotional, or learning difficulties.
• Experience working in a PRU, alternative education setting, or supporting students with additional needs is highly desirable.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with students and staff.
• Patience, empathy, and the ability to manage challenging behaviour calmly and effectively.
• A commitment to promoting the emotional and academic development of students.
• Ability to work as part of a team and also use initiative when required.
• Good organisational and time-management skills.
